Frequently Asked Questions

Visa Requirements

Foreigners seeking to enter the United Republic of Tanzania should be in possession of a valid passport; the passport must be valid for 6 months after the intended length of stay in Tanzania.

Required Vaccines

If you are arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever the government requires proof of yellow fever vaccination; other than the aforementioned, no other vaccination is mandatory.

Travel Insurance

Yes, travel insurance is required to participate in any trip or excursion organized by Misana Voyages. Your travel insurance should cover high-altitude trekking, medical and repatriation costs, and trip cancellation or interruption.

Is Tanzania Safe?

Tanzania is a very safe, secure, and tourist-friendly country. Tanzania has enjoyed a remarkable period of stability and growth since independence back in 1961 and is one of the safest countries in Africa.

Though the risk of crime is minimal in Tanzania, some common-sense precautions are recommended:

  • Leave your expensive jewelry and watches at home
  • Keep all your valuables (passport, wallet, etc.) in a money belt. Carry a few dollars for spending money in an accessible pocket rather than accessing your money belt when shopping.
  • Make copies of all documentation (passport, air itinerary, traveler’s checks, etc.) and keep them segregated from the originals

Traveling with Children

Tanzania is very child friendly and is a great safari destination for families. A safari in Tanzania is one of the most rewarding family vacation experiences.

Money

The currency in Tanzania is the Tanzania Shilling though the U.S. dollar is the most convenient and readily acceptable currency. Visa and MasterCard are also accepted at most lodges and larger shops. It is recommended to bring enough US dollars plus an additional cushion amount to cover all additional expenses. Please make sure to bring new bills as many shops, hotels, and banks in Tanzania will not accept older bills due to counterfeiting problems.

Safari Clothing

We recommend that you pack lightly. For clothing, all you need during are light weigh safari pants and shirts. Generally, Tanzania is a warm place but at night it can become chilly so we recommend a lightweight fleece jacket as well.

Dark colors tend to attract attention from insects such as tsetse flies so they should be avoided. Lighter and natural colors such as khaki, brown, beige, olive, and green are recommended during the day. During the night, the color of your clothing is irrelevant (since Tsetse flies are only active during the day).

Food on Safari

The food on safari is delicious and ranges from simple to gourmet. Chicken, lamb, beef, or pork are usually served at lunch and dinner as well as fish and vegetarian dishes. You can also expect lots of fresh tropical fruits and vegetables.

Language and Culture

Swahili is the official language in Tanzania but there are hundreds of other local dialects. English is the second official language. You will find that the majority of the people that you come in contact with are fluent in English and have a good command of the language.

Tanzanians are friendly people. Politeness, respect, and modesty are highly valued. Handshakes are very important and it is also kind if you learn a few basic Swahili greetings before you arrive.

Refund, Cancellation, and Trip Transfer

Cancellation by Client

If a client can not make the trip, they can transfer their trip to a different date in the future; however, in some circumstances, Misana Voyages reserves the right to reject trip transfers. When a trip transfer is approved, the new trip must happen within one year of the original trip date.

Cancellation requests should be made in writing (via email), and the following refund charges conditions apply.

  • 50% refund if the cancellation happens 60-30 days before the first day of the trip
  • 80% refund if the cancellation is within 60 or more days before the first day of the trip
  • No refund if the cancellation happens less than 30 days before the first day of the trip

If the client abandons a trip after it has begun, there shall be no refunds; any additional costs incurred by Misana Voyages due to trip abandonment shall be billed to the client.

Cancellation by Misana Voyages

Sometimes, Misana Voyages may face circumstances (beyond our control) that may force us to cancel a client’s booking.

Situations that can lead to a cancellation include but are not limited to war, terrorism, hostilities, riots or political unrest (or the threats of any of these), industrial disputes, natural disasters, adverse weather conditions, or the withdrawal of (or significant interference with) travel or accommodation facilities.

If cancellation is inevitable, we will notify you of the cancellation as soon as it is practically possible. We will also offer you a similar tour in the future; if the offer is not acceptable, we will refund all of the monies you paid.
